Bivvy bags, also known as bivvy bags or bivouac sacks, are a lightweight, portable, waterproof shelter often used in backpacking and bikepacking to save valuable space and decrease weight.  In essence, they are essentially waterproof sleeping bags that allow you to set up a sleeping shelter quickly, and in much less space than a normal tent would need.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Both shelters have benefits as well as drawbacks.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Space and time: a bivvy takes up less space both to carry and to place somewhere for your rest which may be more appealing if you need to move on quickly or are carrying your kit with you as you go, this does also mean that it may leave you feeling restricted for space in your bed.  A tent on the other hand is usually much bulkier and takes more ground clearance to pitch up \u2013 this is great if you have lots of items to store or there are a few of you but not so great for transporting or leaving in a hurry.  This does explain why the army favours bivvies instead of tents.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Comfort: <\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

A tent offers more space, therefore more room to spread out it also offers more in terms of comfort. You are less likely to be affected by bugs, rain or the cold while tucked up inside your shelter. A bivvy will generally get you tucked up in your bed quicker but is probably less comfortable than a tent, unless you have a hooped bivi you are likely to have at the very least your face exposed to the elements and critters of the night. There is always the risk too of condensation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Price: <\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Bivvies generally are cheaper, this obviously varies depending on the quality and models you invest in, as does a tent. \u00a0Obviously, over time things have improved, including fabric qualities and ideas, which means some things have become worth investing in, with a tent it may be the space and privacy, whereas with a bivvy it may be comfortable such as a breathable fabric and a hoop to afford more comfort. \u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Conclusion:<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

A bivvy may equal less in terms of space, time, weight, and money \u2013 but that generally means less comfort too.\u00a0 A tent generally means more excess with all the above but affords you more comfort. In conclusion, a tent may be more suitable for holidays or spending long periods of time whereas a bivvy may suit someone that is moving around more frequently \u2013 I guess that is why it is a soldier\u2019s favourite!<\/p>\n\n\n\n
